This is a work by Akashi Yamada, a singer-songwriter who travels through the forests of Japan, creating songs that evoke the deep presence of nature.
This piece was made using a live performance recorded in a beech forest in Appi Highlands, Hachimantai City, Iwate Prefecture-together with the natural sounds of cicadas singing in early summer.
In Japan, there is an old tale that storks bring babies to families. Inspired by that, this song imagines a world where, in Alaska, babies arrive riding on the back of a moose.
It expresses the tenderness and anxiety I felt as a parent welcoming a newborn child-and also, perhaps, the feelings of a divine being who sends each baby into this world from the beyond.
