Through an exquisite musical dialogue between the bandoneon, acoustic guitar, and light percussion, it culminates in a breathtaking, masterfully crafted piece designed to captivate and deeply impress global audiences.
Ariwara no Narihira (825-880) was the quintessential romantic poet of the Heian era, famously known as the model for the protagonist in The Tales of Ise.
This celebrated waka was composed upon viewing a folding screen (byobu) belonging to Empress Takaiko, depicting crimson autumn leaves flowing down the Tatsuta River.
Though the two were once passionate lovers, a strict class divide had forced them apart. Unable to express his affection directly, Narihira veiled his unspoken, enduring love behind the hyperbolic beauty of the landscape-declaring it a sight "unheard of even in the age of the mighty gods." Literarily, it is an absolute masterpiece of Heian romance, elevating Narihira's signature blend of fiery passion and courtly elegance to its ultimate zenith.
