The Shimanto River is a first-class river flowing through western Kochi Prefecture and is the main stem of the Watari River system.
Because no large-scale dams have been built on its main stem, it is called Japan's Last Clear Stream,
and along with the Kakita River and Nagara River, it is counted as one of Japan's Three Great Clear Streams.
