बहुत समय पहले, एक गाँव में एक बूढ़े दादा और दादी रहते थे।
वे गरीब थे, लेकिन दिल के बहुत दयालु थे।

दादा और दादी ने मिलकर पाँच टोपी (कासा) बनाई।
वे उन्हें शहर में बेचकर, नए साल के लिए मोची खरीदना चाहते थे।
दादी ने कहा
“पाँच टोपी हैं, इसलिए मोची तो मिल ही जाएगा।”
“कृपया ध्यान से जाइए। आज रात बर्फ पड़ेगी।”
दादा पाँच टोपी लेकर निकले।
घर से अधिक दूर नहीं गए थे कि बर्फ गिरने लगी।
बर्फ धीरे-धीरे बहुत तेज़ हो गई, इसलिए दादा जल्दी-जल्दी चलते गए।
गाँव की सीमा पर पहुँचकर
उन्होंने देखा कि छह जिज़ो प्रतिमाएँ कतार में खड़ी थीं।
उनके सिर और कंधों पर बर्फ जम गई थी।
दादा उन्हें देखकर आगे नहीं बढ़ पाए।
उन्होंने कहा
“हे जिज़ो-sama, आपको बहुत ठंड लग रही होगी।
कृपया ये टोपी पहन लीजिए।”
दादा ने बेचने वाली टोपी एक-एक करके जिज़ो को पहना दी।
लेकिन जिज़ो छह थे, और टोपी पाँच।
इसलिए दादा ने अपनी खुद की टोपी उतारी
और आखिरी जिज़ो को पहनाई।
घर पहुँचकर दादी हैरान होकर बोलीं
“अरे, आप तो बहुत जल्दी लौट आए! आपकी टोपी कहाँ है?”
दादा ने सब बात बता दी।
दादी मुस्कुराकर बोलीं
“आपने बहुत अच्छा काम किया। मोची नहीं भी मिले तो चलेगा।”
उस रात, देर रात को
बाहर से एक अजीब-सी आवाज़ आई—
“दादा का घर कहाँ है?
कासा के बदले धन्यवाद देने आए हैं।
दादा का घर कहाँ है?
कासा के बदले धन्यवाद देने आए हैं।”
गान की आवाज़ पास आती गई
और दादा के घर के ठीक सामने पहुँचकर—
धड़ाम!
कुछ भारी-सा रखने की आवाज़ हुई।
फिर आवाज़ गायब हो गई।
दादा ने डरते-डरते दरवाज़ा खोला।
उन्होंने देखा कि जिज़ो प्रतिमाएँ
उनकी दी हुई टोपियाँ पहनकर वापस जा रही थीं।
और घर के सामने—
नए साल के लिए मोची और ढेर सारे व्यंजन
पहाड़ की तरह रखे हुए थे।

Overview
The tale begins in the classic Indian storytelling tone:
"Once in a small village, there lived an elderly couple..."
(Long ago, in a small village, lived an elderly couple...)
On a snowy New Year's Eve, the old couple makes five straw hats (straw hat)
The grandfather carries them to town to sell for New Year's mochi.
But along the way, he finds six Jizo statues standing quietly in the cold,
snow piling on their heads and shoulders.
Unable to walk past them, he gently places each hat on the Jizo statues-
even giving up his own last hat for the sixth one.
That night, a mysterious chant echoes from the darkness:
"We have come to thank you for the kasa."
(We have come to thank you for the kasa...)
When the grandfather bravely opens the door,
he finds the Jizo statues walking away wearing the hats he gave them-
and in front of his home:
a mountain of New Year's food, mochi, and blessings.
A moving reinterpretation of kindness returning in unexpected forms-
a story where generosity transcends culture, language, and geography.
