Life, Dream, and Nothing More...
Zo Zhit
Zo Zhit, MC and trackmaker of the rap crew Dos Monos, will release his first solo album, Theater of Life.
Having handled the majority of Dos Monos' beatmaking and rapping, Zo Zhit has also worked alongside the group on numerous side projects, including producing music for other artists, scoring films, and writing as a critic and essayist.
This first solo release under his own name is defined by a sound that leans more heavily into the hip hop he grew up admiring. Where Dos Monos' work was marked by experimentation and genre-crossing soundscapes, this album shifts its center of gravity toward a more authentic hip hop context, carrying the quality of a return to Zo Zhit's own roots. Mixing and mastering was handled by The Anticipation Illicit Tsuboi, an engineer behind numerous landmark Japanese rap releases who has also worked on nearly all of Dos Monos' output - a connection that makes the album feel continuous with Zo Zhit's own musical origins.
Lyrically, the album is grounded throughout in first-person narration - his relationship with family, the path that led to Dos Monos' formation, and the perspective he's gained since becoming a parent himself. Unlike the more speculative language he's used in past critical writing and discussions, the core of this album lies in emotion and memory laid bare over rhyme.
The album's only featured guests are his own crewmates, Botsu a.k.a NGS and TaiTan - a choice that keeps the record from feeling like a fully separate solo statement, instead framing it as Zo Zhit's personal story with his two longtime collaborators quietly standing beside him.
The lead track is "Tokyo Complex," a song built around the dependencies and pleasures of urban life and the overload of information - serving as the entry point into the "city and self" motif that runs through the album.
