Ushiwaka Eboshiori

Inspired by Chikamatsu Monzaemon's "The Folding of the Bird Hat" (1690), a historical piece and fairy tale.

Ushiwakamaru (later known as Minamoto no Yoshitsune), a heir to the Genji clan whose life is threatened by the Heike clan, escapes Mount Kurama and flees to Oshu. To deceive his pursuers, he visits the "Eboshi-ya" (The Hat Maker) in Sanjo, Kyoto. "I want to disguise myself as a merchant traveling eastward. Please make me a special eboshi hat," Ushiwakamaru asks. His master, Sanjo Yoshitsugu, recognizes Ushiwakamaru's extraordinary aura and, while realizing that "this is no ordinary thing," he folds the hat with all his heart. Wearing the left-handed eboshi hat, Ushiwakamaru changes his name, leaves his past behind, and sets out on a journey.

During his journey, he stops at an inn in Akasaka. A gang of robbers led by the master thief Kumasaka Chohan launches a nighttime attack on Ushiwakamaru and his men, targeting their treasure. Pretending to be at a banquet, the thieves attack to lure the men into a false sense of security. However, Ushiwakamaru calmly stands up and turns off the lights. In the darkness, only his sword skills shine. Compared to the huge Kumasaka Chohan, the small Ushiwakamaru dances like a butterfly and stings like a bee. Overnight, the gang of thieves is annihilated. Ushiwakamaru coldly leaves the scene.
