Let the Door Open

Akihiro Sasaki

Azalea Hills is a typical neighborhood located in the west of the sprawling metropolis of Tokyo. It's about a twenty-minute train ride from Shinjuku, the hubbub of the commercial and administrative central hive of Tokyo. Close to the train station of Azalea Hills is a small old-fashioned music bar, Bless, where its regular customers retreat when the working day is done. They are from all walks of life: from a handyman to a major company executive, with ages ranging from early twenties to late sixties. The bar is owned and run by Changie, a forty-year veteran in the music industry. Every night, the regulars shuffle in to play their favorite music: from Japanese enka blues to rock'n'roll. Born out of their impromptu sessions and midnight sprees came this series of compilation albums produced by Bless Records Tokyo. The songs recorded here are not the performances of one special night, but it offers you an experience similar to anytime you open the old wooden door; walk into the bar; join all the regulars, glasses in hands; and listen.
