Soda Float is an album that captures the dazzling light of summer-and the unease of a world trembling beneath it-across nine electronic tracks.
A blue sky seen from a town surrounded by factories. Someone dancing in the moonlight. A warm bowl of soup in a midwinter restaurant. A picnic promised for when the sickness is over. A train bound for the sea. A drive along the Koshu Kaido. Someone smiling from across the table. The morning sun breaking over the Bayshore Route. These songs are filled with memories and ordinary moments shared with someone close. Yet missiles, people trembling behind locked basement doors, cities disappearing into smoke, and the reality of distant countries where even the simple act of making toast cannot be taken for granted continually intrude upon those scenes.
Driven by the rapid pulse of Detroit techno and minimal electronic music, the album keeps moving forward while its melodies and vocals drift as though suspended underwater. The sea, rain, tears, snow, morning mist, cocktails, and the bubbles of passing days recur throughout the lyrics. Water and light dissolve the boundaries between memory and reality, reminding us that the happiness before us will not last forever.
An ice cream float resting on cold soda is sweet and radiant, but it slowly melts and loses its shape. The word "float" also evokes the people at the heart of this album, drifting between memory and tomorrow, the city and the sea, dreams and reality.
Soda Float is not an escape from an unsettled world. It remembers the missiles, the sickness, and the everyday lives being lost in distant places, while still choosing to eat together, go somewhere, fall in love, and wake to another ordinary morning. It is an album that tries to preserve those fleeting moments of happiness in light and bubbles before they disappear.
Gokuraku Virtual. is a music project formed by the AFURI creative team. Reworking the lingering aftertaste of food and urban scenery into electronic music, the project evokes a soft yet slightly uncanny paradise drifting between the realism of Tokyo and its dreamlike otherworldliness. It is another form of expression that opens up a deeper dimension of the AFURI universe.
