AYSAY WAYLAS (Herranza)
La Herranza, also known as señalakuy, is one of the most significant traditional festivals of the Andean peoples.
In the region of Ayacucho and its surroundings, it is typically celebrated between August and September to mark the livestock, primarily cattle. During the herranza, community members adorn the animals' ears with colorful ribbons and brand them with the owner's initials.
These acts are accompanied by ancestral rituals involving coca leaves, chicha de jora (fermented corn beer), and songs of praise for the herd.
The festival is an expression of collective joy: a communal space where family ties, cultural identity, and ancestral wisdom are strengthened.
This composition is inspired by the herranza, fusing its ritualistic and communal spirit with a contemporary sonic language.
Composed and recorded in Chichibu, Japan (a territory also defined by profound ritual and festive traditions), the piece combines the tinya (Andean drum), electric guitar, and synthesizer.
The tinya sustains the ritual pulse and evokes a connection to the earth, the guitar expands the emotional expression, and the synthesizer crafts landscapes that bridge Andean memory with modern sensibility.
This work does not seek to replace traditional music; rather, it reinterprets it from a different land. It builds a sonic bridge between Ayacucho and Chichibu, proving that living traditions can engage in dialogue far beyond their borders.
