The Pencil Passage is a mid tempo city pop track that portrays a borrowed paperback that can no longer be returned, and the pencil lines a former lover left inside it.
Sorting the bookshelf on a long autumn night, a faint family name on the endpaper, wavering underlines drawn without a ruler, and a white eraser rolled out onto the desk create a still nocturnal scene where two ways of reading the same book slowly reveal the distance between two people.
Performed by the fictional AI singer Akemi, the song captures the emotions of adulthood that neither erases the traces to make the book her own, nor adds her own lines over his, but keeps both the marks and the silence as they are.
Inspired by the late 1970s to early 1980s Japanese new music and city pop, the track reimagines that era lyrical subtlety through images of autumn nights, secondhand pages, and the quiet air of a room.
She stops only once, at the darkest line, tracing the way he used to read before closing the book.
Then she stands the borrowed volume among her own spines, wavering lines and all, and lets it become part of her autumn library.

A music project that reimagines the melancholic mood and nighttime glow of late 1970s to early 1980s Japanese City Pop and New Music through AI-assisted production and human direction. Akemi is a fictional singer with a backstory of being from Yamato City, Kanagawa, Japan. She sings of urban solitude, grown-up love, and bittersweet afterglow in a noir-tinged city pop sound. Lyrics, composition, vocals, and visuals are created using generative tools and curated through editing. This is an experimental project exploring the human warmth and nostalgia that can emerge from AI.
