A new musical horizon where tradition and modernity, and the changing seasons intersect.
A fusion album of traditional Japanese folk songs and jazz, 'KOUTA JAZZ'.
From the early spring's "A Single Plum Blossom," to the spring's "Cherry Blossoms at Night," the rainy season's "In the Early Summer Rain," the summer's "Seaside of Oiso," the autumn's "The Sound of Insects," the late autumn's "Floating Falling Leaves," and finally to the winter's "In the First Snow," this work is a musical tapestry depicting the beautiful transitions of Japan's four seasons and the spaces that float between the sounds.

Elegant pieces that carefully preserve the original forms of classical melodies, pieces that boldly reconstruct melodies to create something new, and original songs written inspired by the aesthetics of traditional Japanese folk songs coexist vividly.

From "Saka wa Teruteru," a 300-year-old horseman's song revived with a modern beat, to the lead track "Sore de Sumo to, "which depicts the differences in the emotional temperature of human relationships, the vocals, imbued with the nostalgic and alluring elegance of "Showa-era city pop," collaborate thrillingly with the meticulous technique of a contemporary jazz trio.

At times, you'll listen intently in quiet contemplation; at other times, you'll be overwhelmed by the musicians' breathing. In our hectic modern world, this one-of-a-kind crossover album offers a tranquil experience and a high-quality musical journey.

Artist Profile

  • Naoko Suzuki

"Redefining Japanese Tradition through the Lens of Modern Jazz" Born and raised in Japan, she began her journey with jazz standards at age 22. While building a career as a Japanese language instructor, a growing desire to explore her own cultural identity led her to the world of Kouta - traditional songs accompanied by the three-stringed Shamisen. After making her mark on the Tokyo jazz scene in 2022 and releasing her debut album "Never Said" in 2025 at the age of 60, Naoko has embarked on a bold new chapter. In her latest project, she collaborates with the highly acclaimed jazz pianist Yasumasa Kumagai to create music that is deeply rooted in the soulful essence of Kouta. Their sound is strikingly eclectic, blending traditional Japanese melodies with modern jazz harmonies reminiscent of Robert Glasper. Naoko believes that true Japanese beauty lies in "Ma" (the sense of space) and the elegance of imperfection. Through her lyrics and vocal style, she embodies this philosophy, leaving a generous canvas for the listener's imagination to flourish as she bridges the gap between ancient tradition and the contemporary jazz frontier.
