Artist Profile

  • yuji takahashi

    Composer and pianist, born in 1938. He studied under Minao Shibata, Roh Ogura, and Iannis Xenakis. From 1963 to 1966, he worked as a contemporary-music pianist in France and Germany. From 1966 to 1971, he performed and researched computer music in the United States. After returning to Japan in 1972, he co-founded the composers group Transonic with Toru Takemitsu and others in 1974, editing its quarterly journal until 1976. From 1978 to 1985, he arranged and performed protest songs from around the world with the Suigyu Band, and from 1980 to 1987, he published the monthly independent magazine Suigyu Tsushin. His publications include Yuji Takahashi: The 1970s Collection and The Silence of Sound, the Sound of Silence from Heibonsha, as well as Music as a Starting Point and Kafka Notes from Misuzu Shobo.
