Born in Florida and raised in Tokyo, London and Pennsylvania, the Japanese-American pianist and bandleader George Nagata balances his lithe technical skill with a soulful and melodious approach that speaks of his deep love for the music. Nagata first studied classical piano at age of four, and with strong influence from jazz pianist Oscar Peterson he started performing in the style of jazz, pops and soul music in several bands as a teenager. After five years of performing regularly in Tokyo clubs he had moved to San Diego to play in the West Coast music scene for two years, and then back to Tokyo to deepen and broaden his style of performance. Since then, he has performed with local and international musicians from US, Mexico, France, Indonesia and Israel, while travelling to Asia and Europe and touring domestically to perform in concerts and jazz festivals as the leader and arranger of his piano/vocal/guitar trio Triple Standard. From 2012 he has released eight albums as a leader and arranger in the jazz, pop and Latin music, while participating in recordings projects for pops & soul singers, performing for theatrical performances, and collaborating with dancers, painters and fashion designers. In 2016 he joined the instrumental quintet Ichimujin, releasing the album StillMotion from a Japanese major label King Records and providing music for several feature films. As a band they have performed in Sao Paulo, Mexico City and New York, and also concert halls throughout Japan. As a lover and believer of vocal music, he has hosted highly acclaimed event Vocal Crossing at JZ Brat Shibuya nineteen times in six years, each time inviting three expressive singers in Japan to showcase their talent and harmony, across all genres from pops, soul, jazz, musicals and film soundtracks, highlighting the vocals with just the piano. His selfless dedication to the music can be heard in the lyrical performance style, appreciated by the wide audience and acclaimed by many musicians alike.
