Last train

Cold air

One more minute

Standing there

Christmas lights above the tracks

Glowing soft behind your back

The platform clock says we should go

But neither one of us moves slow

You hold your ticket in your hand

I pretend I understand

How to say a casual goodnight

When my heart is nowhere near polite

People pass and doors slide open

Snow falls quiet through the station

If I had one wish to spend

I’d make this moment never end

Christmas Eve before the last train

We’re almost close, but not quite there

Every silence says a little

More than either of us dares

Christmas Eve before the last train

Don’t know what we’re waiting for

If you miss yours, I might miss mine

Just to stand here a little more

Oh-oh, don’t go yet

Oh-oh, not like this

Oh-oh, one more line

Before we run out of time

You say, “Text me when you’re home”

I say, “Yeah, you too,” too low

Then we laugh at nothing much

Both too careful, both too stuck

Your shoulder brushes into mine

I look down at the yellow line

Never thought a crowded place

Could feel like only us tonight

The speaker calls your train again

I count the seconds in my head

You turn like you might say something

Then smile and hide it instead

Christmas Eve before the last train

We’re almost close, but not quite there

Every silence says a little

More than either of us dares

Christmas Eve before the last train

Don’t know what we’re waiting for

If you miss yours, I might miss mine

Just to stand here a little more

Maybe we’re afraid to name it

Maybe that would change too much

Maybe “see you soon” is safer

Than admitting this is love

But when the bell starts ringing

And the doors begin to close

You reach back for my sleeve

Like you don’t wanna go

Christmas Eve before the last train

We were almost close, now we’re there

Your hand finds mine for a second

Like an answer in the air

Christmas Eve before the last train

You say, “I can wait one more”

So we let the night keep going

On this platform, warm and slow

Oh-oh, don’t go yet

Oh-oh, stay like this

Oh-oh, one more line

Now we didn’t run out of time

Last train

Moves on

You smile

I’m home
