I grew up with my grandparents.
Naturally, I developed a strong accent. It's Akita dialect.
When I was in high school, my classmates made fun of the way I spoke.
Since then, I've developed an inferiority complex about my dialect.
So even when I started music, I naturally wrote poetry and sang songs in standard Japanese.
At some point, I became interested in my roots, and the content of my poetry began to take on an indigenous feel.
At the same time, I became interested in language, and gradually began incorporating Akita dialect into my songs.
This trend eventually gave birth to something known as Akita dialect blues.
A dialect that was ridiculed and despised in Tohoku was hugely well-received when I performed live in the city.
"I want to hear more songs in Akita dialect."
"I have no idea what you're saying, but that's what makes it great."
"I look forward to listening to your songs every month."
My inferiority complex vanished, replaced by confidence and pride. If you want to laugh, then laugh. I will continue to sing loudly in the Akita dialect.
