Artist Profile

  • MASUMI

Who is MASUMI? What does she have to say? The answers lie in her latest single "Run Baby, Run" produced and engineered by Mark Fazio. Her music tells an emotional and empowering story that is made to uplift but also console her audience with lyrical messages that connect us through our shared life experiences and struggles. With one voice and one guitar, Japanese singer-songwriter MASUMI transcends cultural borders. MASUMI creates music with the intention of giving hope to others without shying away from the darkness that makes us all human. This duality is continually present in a voice that is both -- vulnerable and self-aware, powerful yet humble and that bridges the sound of Folk and Pop When asked about her motivation, MASUMI shares that she found her strength and calling to pursue music after living through the devastating 2011 Tohoku earthquake in her home country of Japan. Feeling the 9.0 magnitude tremors while trapped in an underground café in Tokyo inspired her to choose a path that made her feel alive. Following her true path and passion for music, MASUMI moved to Los Angeles and attended the Los Angeles Music Academy. Since graduating, MASUMI has worked with top industry veterans such as - singer and vocal coach Dorian Holley (Michael Jackson, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno) and Grammy-award winning producer/engineer J.J Blair (Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash and The Who.) MASUMI has also worked with Warner Brothers songwriter/producer Ichiro Suezawa (Michelle Branch, Bruno Marz, Beyonce), multi-platinum award-winning songwriter/producer Nash Overstreet (Hot Chelle Rae) and Grammy-nominated producer Tristian Boston. Her continued dedication and worldly appeal has led to international collaborations and tours including a duo with Swedish singer/songwriter Mona Najib (EP "BLOOM" produced by J.J Blair and tour in Sweden) and one month tour in Japan with her trio band in 2014. 2016 set a new landmark with her first EP release in her homeland entitled "Tokyo Tour" and an enticing endeavor from a prestigious management company in Japan After a period of honest self-reflection, the songstress decided to walk away from this career-defining moment. MASUMI chose to remain in the states to explore possibilities that were more aligned with the artist she was becoming. In 2017, MASUMI was signed by Amuse talent management agency and has since been booking commercials, prints and appeared in music videos for major artists such as Justin Timberlake, Bishop Briggs and YouTube star Shae-lee Shackleford (SketchShe.) As her career continues to evolve and MASUMI continues to explore her talents, she remains true to herself and the message of hope she aims to share with the world. MASUMI has worked with not-for-profit organizations GenNext x College Music (NAMM Show), Women's Rights at CSDI, Optimist Youth Home Organization and traveled throughout Southeast Asia building homes in support of those oppressed by corrupt governments. The release of MASUMI's new single touches on the duality of life, the dark against the light and the light within the dark. She believes we never know where enlightenment comes from. "Run Baby" shows the possibilities and strengths that we are all capable of.
