Inspired by Chikamatsu Monzaemon, "The Three-Floor Storehouse of Tsuruga" (1699)
Chikamatsu Monzaemon's period piece.

Tsuruga Port, Echizen Province (present-day Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture). A winter port town where Kitamaebune ships pass through.

The "Three-Floor Storehouse" (Sangai-gura).

Built by a wealthy merchant, this three-story storehouse was unusually large for its time.

The first floor is filled with wealth (rice and gold), the second with sin (prostitutes and secrets), and the third with madness (a forbidden room).
Due to the storekeeper's betrayal, the two are trapped inside the storehouse. The heavy door closes, and complete darkness and silence descend. The only sounds are the creaking of the wooden floor (Rim Shot) and their own breathing.
Cold and hungry, the two wander through the storehouse, from the first floor to the second, and then to the forbidden third floor. With each staircase they climb, they begin to see visions of past causes and effects and hallucinations. "This storehouse is not a place to store things. It's a place to bury people."
From the third-floor window they can see a lead-colored sky and snow. In despair, the two begin to destroy the expensive fabrics and antiques in the storehouse (a destructive impulse). However, when morning comes, only the three-story storehouse, buried in snow, stands there in silence.

"A mouse is laughing and watching."
"This storehouse..."
"It's strangely quiet, and creepy."

"Namu Amida Butsu!"
"The sky in the north is the color of lead."
"The sea in Tsuruga sounds like it's roaring."
"The first floor has a yield of 1,000 koku. "Rice bales piled high."
"The second floor is made of old, striped cotton."
"The three-story storehouse is like the cauldron of hell!"
"The slope of hell, the mountain of needles."
"Namu Amida Butsu!"

"The ladder has come loose, a pitfall."
"Who's there?! Who's there?"

"Remnants of this world, even the night."
"The bells are ringing, three bells."
