This is a lo fi instrumental recorded in the daytime at Nekke2 Social Club in Naha using a cassette tape MTR.
The gut guitar inspired by the tuning of the Okinawan sanshin interacts playfully with the sanshin itself.
Though lo fi in texture the sound of both instruments is vivid and warm offering a mix of Okinawan atmosphere and raw street energy.
Wataru Kousaka is a musician raised in Okinawa, Japan. He creates impressionistic and ambient instrumental music using traditional instruments from various parts of Asia, including the sanshin, sarod and dan bau. His compositions draw soundscapes that feel like paintings made of wind and light. His music is deeply influenced by his early experience with choral singing, where each voice played a different role and supported the others. Instruments with different tonalities and characters are not blended into uniformity, but gently brought closer through tuning adjustments, creating harmony through mutual respect rather than sameness. Each piece offers a quiet yet vivid expression of memory, atmosphere and the breath of his island home.
