It was not manipulation

It was not a noble thing

Just a habit from surviving

Rooms that could not hold the sting

Easier to hear

Soft enough to sit with you

But somewhere in the making

I made less of me

Maybe you would have stayed

If I had let the whole thing show

Maybe you would have left

But at least then I would know

Now I have a cleaner story

And a quieter face

But the truth still moves inside me
