In this world

Light does not fall in only one direction

If some reach for the sun

Others return to the earth

Where the wind moves freely

In that open direction

Young sunflowers lift their faces to the sky

The air laughs, wings dance

It is the season where life swells

Across from them

Stand the sunflowers with bowed heads

Their colors have dimmed, their sounds grown distant

And yet, quietly

They carry the future within

Within a single stem

Beginning and end reside together

What has fully bloomed

Does not see the end

But the map to its next seed

Even as I touch the beauty of the open world

My heart leans toward the silence

To return the light

I step away from its shine—

And find beauty in the path where life goes home

Unseen by any eye

Unheld by memory

Still the earth remembers their shape

It is in the act of sinking

That the seed is born
