Artist Profile

  • Takumi Nakanowatari

Takumi Nakanowatari is a Tokyo-based drummer, composer, and improviser. Self-taught since age 13, he studied forestry and instrument-making research at Tokyo University of Agriculture, where he also began performing actively with big bands and jazz ensembles. After graduating, he committed fully to music. Influenced by John Cage's definition of silence, "the time of sounds not intended by the one who listens", his practice explores free improvisation as a way of welcoming environmental sound into the music itself, as a full participant rather than background noise. His debut leader recording sobadateru Live at Gekkasha (September 2025), released on his own imprint Kagemukai no Ie, emerged directly from this inquiry, and was cited in Jazz Hihyo No. 250 by critic Narushi Hosoda as bringing "a new interpretation to quiet improvisation and field recording." His follow-up, soundotonoise(s) (June 2026), continues this exploration with a new trio. In December 2025, he led a quartet at Kōen-dōri Classics (Tokyo) with pianist Fumi Endo, saxophonist Masaki Hanawa, and bassist Yuka Konishi. He welcomes collaboration, festival appearances, and curatorial projects that treat music as a living, environmental practice.
