Contrarianism was originally a type of investment technique. Simply put, it is an investment stance that moves against the trend of the market.
So what would happen if you went against the trend in your own life? There are no absolute standards for the "market" of life. It is always turning inside out according to your own standards. The flow of time shifts the standards. The other side of the other side is no longer the other side. Gradually you lose sight of your coordinates.

This song is a one-man play written by a pathetic thirtysomething working man who actually wanted to live a subcultural life, struggling between his own ideals mixed with lingering attachment and the pride of having his feet on the ground.
