Please forgive us

Forgive us for trespassing upon Your dwelling

We, Your servants, have built boxes of steel

To You, it must be utterly unpleasant —

A reckless act, irreverent beyond measure

Please, chastise us with Your power

Some may mistake such punishment

As proof that You still see them

Yet the guilt of flaunting this power remains

Now we rise beyond the clouds, beyond the atmosphere —

Into the very air You created

To let us live and breathe

We defy even that, striving ever higher

Your anger, we understand, is only just

Some among us seek to know the universe

Some act for selfish gain

And some wish to return the wisdom

To the Earth You have nurtured

We shall tell them:

No world is as blessed as ours

We are proud — proud to live upon this blessed sphere

Where countless beings thrive

Under Your endless grace

Through the ages

The scenery remains beautiful, unchanging

Because You have always watched over it

And loved it still

How offensive it must be, then

That we so often stain the beauty You made

We are aware of this

We strive not to defile it —

Though some among us do not

Yet You, who created our hearts

Surely understand their complexity

So let us say only this: someday

You may think those who say “someday”

Will never act

And perhaps You are right

But if You can still wait for us

Perhaps the day will come —

When we may finally bring You

The fruits of our efforts
