声と人の境がまだ曖昧だった頃、

”それ”が、密かに“真理を写す”という噂があった。

その階段には、三つの禁忌が...。

ひとつ、上りながら本音を落としてはならぬ。

ひとつ、途中で“返事”をしてはならぬ。

理由を知る者はいなかった。

ただ、誰もがそこに足をかけようとした。

ある夜、僕はふと”それ”に足をかけてしまう。

階段は静かに息をし、

僕の沈黙を待っているようだった。

上るたびに、

胸の奥の重さが薄れ、

忘れたい記憶が遠ざかり、

僕の輪郭が淡くなる。

自分を手放す行為だった。

下るたびに、

置き去りにした痛みが戻り、

眠らせていた感情が疼き、

影が濃くなる。

だが、途中で“それ”が囁いた。

どこにもいないのに、

確かに“僕の声”だった。

「おまえが上った分だけ、

私はおまえに近づいていく。

おまえが下った分だけ、

おまえは私に戻っていく。」

その瞬間、意味を悟った。

階段の一段一段は、

高さでも距離でもなく、

“僕とそれ”の境界を測るためのものだったのだと。

最後の一段に足をかけたとき、

”それ”は僕の言葉を先に呟いた。

「おまえが望むなら、

おまえの代わりに

おまえを生きよう。」

振り返ると、

”そこ”には“僕の影だけ”が置き去りに。

——”そこ”に足を踏み入れた者が

自分の声を失っているという。
