The Girl in the Backseat

Takayuki Yokota-Murakami

"May I stay home?" asks she in the back

As Dad gives her a ride to the school

She don't want to go as she's had a fight with Isaac

Dad says the boy's just a fool

"On top of that we have today P. E

The only class that bothers me

"That's weird. I loved it," Dad answers then remembers:

She's not with him any more

The girl and Dad chat onboard happily

On the weekend excursion to the lake

She begs for new swimming suits and a small water bike

Joyfully Daddy agrees

"Dad, take a look at a cute big stuffed whale

That I found at the Church garage sale."

"That's great! Let me see it," Dad looks back in the mirror

Only to find there's no one

No, no. The girl was killed

In a car crash for which he was to blame

Why he alone survived?

It's his life that should have been claimed

But he forgets all that

"Are we there, yet?" asks she in the back

They're driving to his sis on a vac

It's a long trip of a hundred miles

Dad has to say "Not yet" over a thousand of times

"Just be patient, you like aunt Jess' pound cake

That she's always willing to bake."

The girl screams, “I adore it.” But Dad just can’t hear her

There's no one but him in the car

So he keeps talking to the girl, just keeps talking to the girl

And keeps talking to the girl in the back

Forgetting she's not any more
