Just because it’s spring again

Doesn’t mean I smile that easy

Still the morning light comes down

Like it’s looking right at me

Tying up my shoelaces

With the same hands I’ve always had

But even this familiar day

Looks a little new somehow

Names I don’t know fill the room

And my breathing starts to shorten

Just to sit up straight in here

Already feels like trying

Still, nobody here has seen

Who I was before this morning

That should scare me, maybe yeah

But somehow I can breathe here

I came in scared — still I came in

Right now, that is enough

I don’t need a brand new face

I can start like this

This small voice is still my voice

Spring still found me here

Even now, not smiling right

I can feel it start

Roll call fading through the room

Blank white pages, window open

And the wind that wandered in

Made the whole day brighter

Nothing special, nothing new

Still it felt like something turning

Maybe that is how a start

Comes without a sound

She looked over at my pen

Said, “That looks nice to write with”

I just said, “Yeah, it really is”

Nothing smart, nothing polished

Just that answer

That was all

And the hardest part in me

Softened up a little

I came in scared — still I came in

I don’t have to lose my past

I can start like this

Those few quiet words I gave

Brought me back to me

Even now, not smiling right

I can feel it start

Maybe I can’t smile well yet

Maybe words still catch and stumble

But I sat down, faced ahead

So I’m not the same as yesterday

I don’t need to be someone new

I can start as me

Still awkward, still breathing in

Spring still makes it through
