She likes working within the shoegaze, pop-rock, and J-Pop genres, bridging the gap between her two cultures by exploring songs in both English and Japanese. Her main musical inspirations include Mitski, Feeble Little Horse, and Paramore which shape her emotive style. Cheney's writing process often stems from her reactions to personal experiences and reflections on past events. Writing serves as her therapy, allowing her to explore and understand her emotions and thoughts.
