Études d'ailleurs is an album centered on the complete world premiere recording of Études pour Piano d'après Modes japonais (1970) by the Japanese composer Yoritsuné Matsudaira.
Alongside this work, the album features Les cinq doigts (1921) by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, 12 Études (1916) by the Polish composer Karol Szymanowski, and the first Japanese recording of Sei Studi per Pianoforte (1943) by the Italian composer Alfredo Casella, thereby presenting a diverse panorama of twentieth-century piano études.
The album reflects a desire for listeners to engage with the distinctive sonic worlds opened up by each of these four composers. Its French title, Études d'ailleurs, literally means "Études from Elsewhere." When one thinks of twentieth-century piano études, the works of Claude Debussy in the first half of the century and those of György Ligeti in the second inevitably occupy central positions. This album, however, invites listeners to explore a different kind of étude repertoire-one born from other aesthetic and cultural vantage points, rich in individuality and color.
The album will be released in four volumes. Vol. 3 includes Nos. 17-19 of Matsudaira's Études pour Piano d'après Modes japonais together with Szymanowski's 12 etiud, Op. 33

Recorded: 7-9 December 2016 (Stravinsky) and 12-13 March 2018 (Matsudaïra) at the Tamba Sasayama Municipal Rural Symphonic Hall.
