Furrows

Tera Kira

Words don’t always come out right

My ears can’t catch the sound

From the same world I was cast aside

A dog with no place to be found

But the dog was happy to be alive

Every day, each day, he took a walk

Testing how far he could survive

Walking until his paws would talk

Never part of the pack

Always alone, always behind

Little toys along the path

Finding joy in what he could find

One day he wondered in his heart

Why am I different from the rest?

They laughed and said he didn’t make sense

And pushed him aside, with jest

Then memories slowly came

Faded, distant, soft as a flame

And in that haze, a younger self appeared

A little dog he had once revered

I wanted to call out, to be near

But from afar, I could only peer

Waving quietly, trying not to show

The bond that time would never know

“Who is this stranger?” he asked in the air

“I’m you,” I’d say if life were fair

Watching you cry from far away

I could do nothing, could only stay

If I had lived a different way

Maybe I’d be brave enough to say

With chest held high, proudly true

That you are me, and I am you

But I am different, I cannot pretend

You are yourself, I am me till the end

Maybe that’s fine, maybe that’s right

We are what we are, through day and night

Always close, always far

But the words never reach where we are

Long ago, long ago, in a place so still

There was a dog who looked beyond the hill

His eyes gazed far, soft and slow

Soft and slow, letting the moments go
