• Aoi Sasaki

  A visual and sound artist based in Hokkaido, carrying an innate animistic worldview and lived experience of schizophrenia , a condition that brought with it the dissolution of a fixed sense of self. After being discharged from a psychiatric hospital in 2002, she began drawing her beloved animals with whatever colored pencils were at hand, as a way of questioning what it means to be alive. She later moved to Nibutani, Hokkaido ,a community with a significant Ainu population , and then to Sapporo, where she began composing for piano. In 2022, the band in which she performed and composed was selected as a finalist in the Sapporo City Jazz Park Jazz Live Contest. In recent years she has also been creating video art.
