A light that has no name yet

Is breathing deep within the silence

As though sealing shut a book of night

A thousand locks are shining

The words I hold within my hands

Are far too small

To reach the depths of the sea

Each time I try to speak of a single star

I lose something of the vastness of the sky

And still

I will stand before the gate

Carrying no answers

Only to hear the voice

Calling from beyond

What has been sealed away

This is not the Truth

It is a ladder leaning toward the Truth

This is not the Light itself

It is the shadow

Through which we rise toward the Light

Lead me on

Twenty-two letters

Weave together the names of the world

Ten lights

Open the pages of the Zohar

Yet every path has boundaries—

Three shores we must not cross

O heart that longs to know

Do not rush toward the Light

Step by step, I let go of every name

Step by step, I loosen the bonds of self

I am not climbing toward some greater height;

I am awakening into deeper depths

You need not all be opened

This is not the Truth

It is a ladder leaning toward the Truth

That the door of my heart

May open before the question

Turning another's words into a ladder

I climb toward the flame

Burning in the depths of the Zohar

Not to see through another's eyes

But to stand before

What I cannot yet see

The path is here

The entrance is here

But I alone must walk it

O silence

Become the first letter

O darkness

Carry within you

The first light

And now

I reach out

And touch the ladder—

As one

Who still

Knows nothing
