"You know, a lot of Arab pop plays during disco time, and sometimes there are really great songs, but I can't understand the lyrics!

So, please listen to this:

'Ah- Darbuka'"

Artist Profile

  • J.S.Ramis

Founder/Director of the Turkish-style Darbuka school "Studio Darbuka" A pure-blooded Filipino, born in Japan and hailing from Mie Prefecture, he plays the Egyptian drum (darbuka) using the Turkish technique, often performing to modern/contemporary music. He was captivated by the driving rhythm and freedom produced by a single drumhead in high school, leading him to purchase a darbuka. As there were very few darbuka players in Japan at the time, he taught himself and mastered the Turkish playing style. After moving to Tokyo, he honed his skills by collaborating in sessions with various musicians across Japan, establishing a unique style of playing that incorporates his own original compositions and popular songs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he launched a YouTube channel and continued streaming for about three years, performing requested songs live without any rehearsal. This intensive practice has made him so adept at improvisation that he can play requests gathered during a live performance on the spot. He is highly regarded for his free-form staging, which fully leverages his MC (Master of Ceremonies) skills, honed on YouTube, and his remarkable improvisational abilities.
