The ash of time

The ash upon the silent shelves is deep

Evidence of voices that the shadows keep

A prayer written down by someone long ago

Between the pages where the echoes flow

Inside the night where my heart does not beat

I am forgetting all the voices in the heat

Silence is the truth that’s finally told

As I embrace the weight of what I hold

The broken quill and the rusted key

Staring at the door of a secret legacy

Knowing that it will never open wide

Still I write the dreams I have inside

The unread poems melt into the gray

The lamp with no light mocks the end of day

Only the warmth that lingers in my chest

Tells of the life that’s put into the test

Library of ash and a heart so still

Even with no pulse I am here with will

Life woven with words that have no sound

Like a prayer that is never to be bound
