Artist Profile

  • Akimi Morinaga

A pop music artist based in Tokyo, Akimi Morinaga blends diverse genres, including MPB (Brazilian popular music) and kayōkyoku, into a contemporary sound. His style, which explores fiction and the realities adjacent to it, recalls the work of self-writing and performing pop artists associated with the New Music movement in Japan. In 2018, he released his first EP, Room of Homage, a six-track work developed over the course of a year from demos he had recorded himself. The following year, performing as Akimi Morinaga & Il Paradiso, he appeared at FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL 19 ROOKIE A GO-GO and Ringo Music Festival 2019. He also released Minmin TV, produced by Takeshi Namura, known as an early director of KIRINJI. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Morinaga has continued to create music primarily from his home studio. In 2022, he held his first solo concert, End Stage Act. Beginning in September 2023, he released a new single every month for nine consecutive months. In June 2025, he released his first full-length album, Alfa. The album marked the culmination of his efforts to pay homage to the history of Japanese New Music while reconstructing its legacy through contemporary methods. He subsequently embarked on a release tour, successfully performing three shows in Nagoya, Kyoto, and Tokyo.
