Ignition Distance
Akemi
Ignition Distance is a mid tempo city pop track that portrays a quiet autumn night when a woman, riding in the passenger seat along a Japanese national route, watches her companion turn the dial of a small wall water heater in a roadside diner, and is suddenly pulled back to the kitchen she grew up in.
A passenger seat on Route 246, the tick-tick of a small pilot flame, a blue fire coming to life on the wall, and the line of fence lights at a nearby base stretching beyond the parking lot all gather into a still interior scene where everyday warmth quietly slides into a night that was meant to stay extraordinary.
Performed by the fictional AI singer Akemi, the song captures the emotions of adulthood that recognize a closeness without any fence, yet refuse to give it a name, because naming it would mean watching it decay one day. The absentminded motion of the other hand turning the dial and the slow shift of cold water into warm water are layered over the single beat of a heart that has just been caught off guard.
Inspired by the late 1970s to early 1980s Japanese new music and city pop, the track reimagines that era urban lyricism through images of a roadside diner, a wall mounted water heater, the fence lights of a nearby base, and the words a woman swallows back in a passenger seat.
The words - let us drive a little more - are left unsaid, as she pulls the seatbelt across her chest and stays in her seat while the fence lights begin to stream by. What remains is not a confession, but the single fact that she did not step out, and the echo of that small tick-tick traced along the window by her fingertip.
