A lifelong admirer of Japanese rock music, he made the pivotal decision to relocate to Japan when the opportunity arose, a move that significantly shaped both his identity and creative direction. As a Black American artist living and creating in Japan, HOKUTOBILL operates within a unique cultural intersection. Fluent in Japanese, he navigates seamlessly between American and Japanese influences, translating diverse musical and lived experiences into a sound that resists easy categorization. His musical foundation spans the emotional depth of 70s R&B, the power and theatricality of 80s rock, hard rock, and metal, and the dramatic intensity and visual aesthetic of 90s Visual Kei. Rather than replicate nostalgia, he reinterprets these eras through a modern lens, blending vintage sensibilities with contemporary production techniques. At the core of his artistry is a belief that timeless influence can evolve.
