Walking through needles of rain

Nowhere to hide

Neon signs are smiling, blurred by the night

Red brake lights trace lines on the street

Worn-out soles sink into shallow puddles

The scent of wet asphalt rises slowly

Cold seeps through the fabric on my chest

Rain taps the mailbox, counting the time

Frozen fingers tighten on the handle

I breathe in sync with passing lights

Letting myself dissolve into the flow

Tracing the rhythm of the falling needles

Needles of rain stitch time in place

Streetlights bend and lose their shape

Shadows of places I can’t return to

Sway beneath the shelter of my umbrella

I bite into the cold

And leave a single footprint behind

Behind closed shutters, someone’s life goes on

The smell of damp paper searches old days

I draw a line on fogged-up glass

Watching it fade brings quiet relief

I lift my collar, brushing rain from my skin

A fading siren lets the city breathe again

The shadow of pain grows a little thinner

Water sings beneath my shoes

My steps begin to widen

When silence speaks louder than wounds

My footsteps finally creak aloud

On the overpass, wet wind pushes my back

I glance at the intersection, still soaked in light

Through a crack in my umbrella

I find a glow

I don’t need anyone’s voice now

Even with closed eyes, I feel the road

Inside my wet hood, warm breath loosens

I catch a raindrop on my tongue

Just to taste it

Even the rain forgets how to hurt

Needles turn into fragile lines

A thin sheet of quiet rests on my cheek

I stay with this cold a little longer

Just to be sure

And take another step

And I walked on, pierced and whole

The rain still stuck in me grows dull and heavy

Beyond the blurred world, I spot a light

Even if nothing fully dries

I know now — that’s enough

I fold the city’s cold

Deep inside my chest

And walk toward the next scene
