Answering

Kanchu-Yuei

Being Killed By Summer (feat. KASANE TETO)

    Kanchu-Yuei

Answering is a two-track single by Kanchu-Yuei, a music project built around the concept of a blue light that stays beside pain.
The title track, Answering is a dream pop song about repeatedly calling out to something drifting farther away-pleading, "don't disappear" and "don't leave," while continuing to send a voice toward it nonetheless. Within its cold, inorganic imagery lies an urgent desire to hold on to something that is slowly being lost.
Sonically, the track uses no synthesizers. Instead, layers of guitars with different tones, distortion, ambience, and spatial depth are stacked upon one another, forming a wall of sound in which harmonics and noise gradually dissolve into each other. Beginning with a quiet, restrained introduction, the arrangement steadily grows denser until the chorus opens into an expansive soundscape, as though the emotion held back until that moment has suddenly filled the entire field of vision.
mon's dynamically expressive vocal performance follows the same arc. Her voice initially feels carefully placed within the surrounding sound, controlled and restrained, before releasing its emotion all at once in the chorus. The fragility that occasionally reveals itself beneath the power of her voice is also a defining element of the track.
The second track, "Being Killed by Summer feat. Kasane Teto," moves toward the opposite extreme, portraying the sensation of the body and memory slowly dissolving within an oppressive summer heat. Images of 37°C temperatures, blue burns, and the shoreline are layered with Kasane Teto's synthetic voice and massive, heavily distorted guitars. At its center lies the paradoxical plea, "don't heal."
Despite their completely different temperatures, the two songs share the same underlying impulse: the desire to keep reaching toward something that is disappearing, or toward a pain that refuses to fade.
Following the release of their first EP, Di-Acute, Kanchu-Yuei retains the weightless atmosphere of their dream pop roots while pushing their sound further into darker, colder, and more deeply shadowed territory.
The "blue light that stays beside pain" at the heart of Kanchu-Yuei has never been a light meant to erase suffering. On this release, it takes two forms: "Answering," the act of continuing to send a voice toward something that is fading away, and "Summer," the act of holding on to a memory that one does not wish to heal from.
