I tried translating the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu into modern language and creating a song.
This particular poem is from Emperor Sutoku:
-Swift-flowing rapids / blocked by rocks / even if the river splits / I will find a way / to meet you in the end-
Here is my modern translation:
Beyond the ticket gate, your back fades away
All I could say was, 'Take care'
The door closed as if tearing us apart
Separating this city and you from me
The smile in your phone is painfully beautiful
My scrolling fingers tremble
You say, 'It's okay,' but I know
Like a fierce river blocked by rocks
Splitting into two streams
Even if we can't meet now, even against fate
I will surely find you
The days we laughed over silly things
Walking side by side down our usual path
Being next to you felt so normal
But now it feels like such a distant world
'I believe in you,' your words, like a charm
I hold them tight, getting through sleepless nights
Only our promises become the light
Like a fierce river blocked by rocks Splitting into two streams Even if we can't meet now, even against fate I will surely find you Even if this is punishment My feelings for you won't change Even if I am at the end of the world I believe my voice will reach you Even if the fierce river is smashed against rocks And rages as a muddy torrent Someday we'll surely come together again Because I will never let go of your hand
The map of my 57 years has been completed. I don't have a compass, but I will trust my intuition and set out on a journey to find my future self. I wonder what kind of people I will meet. What kind of scenery will I encounter? Hiroshi's journey begins now.
