Four Small Laments is an EP of four small pieces steeped in quiet shadow.
It is a dark work, but not one born from some fierce, extraordinary despair.
Rather, it dwells in the small shadows that slip, almost unnoticed, into anyone's daily life.
These pieces were shaped by trying to gather, just as they are, the loneliness that resists words and the heaviness whose reason never fully comes clear.
None of these pieces seeks to speak of sorrow in grand terms.
A cloudy afternoon, a room gone slightly cold, the stillness after something has passed.
Music that settles naturally into such moments, and from time to time brushes against the inner darkness that has not yet found words.
That is the kind of presence I hoped for.
This work also stands as a companion to Three Quiet Pieces, a gentler collection of small pieces.
If that EP turns toward the softness held within stillness, this one turns toward the shadows resting within that same stillness.
Not quite as vivid as light and shadow, perhaps, but as the subtle contrast of brightness and dimness that truly belongs to everyday life, I would be glad if these two works could stand side by side.
