• recess

  recess is a band based in Osaka Japan. Starting out with roots in pop punk the band gradually incorporated influences from artists like Basement and Deftones and developed a sound that moves freely between US alternative rock shoegaze and emo while refusing to be confined to any single genre. At the core of the music is raw emotion and initial impulse delivered through performances that continue to evolve as the band grows as a live act. While currently focusing on live houses recess ultimately aims to become a band that can adapt its expression to any space or situation. The long term vision is to bridge the gap between the overseas alternative scene and the alternative movement in Japan and to expand reach across audiences and contexts while carving out a sound that is unmistakably unique. Both songwriting and live performance remain works in progress but that ongoing process is what gives recess its distinctive energy. Through consistent live shows the band has begun to feel the music resonating with a wider audience. To date recess has released a total of 13 songs across singles and EPs produced four music videos and held three self promoted events under the title Porter Street. The presence of the band has continued to grow and current monthly listeners on Spotify are around 5000. Looking ahead recess is determined to step beyond the boundaries of live houses and perform in more open environments including festivals circuit events and outdoor stages. Having witnessed moments when a band discovered by chance at Fuji Rock becomes unforgettable recess sees the festival as a place that can unlock new possibilities and mark a major turning point. In June 2026 recess is set to release a first full length album consisting of 11 tracks followed by a release tour covering five cities from July to August. Through this album and tour the band aims to scale up as a live act and bring the name recess to a much broader field. Still at the beginning of the journey recess is fully committed to delivering the sound that can only exist in the present moment and pushing boldly into the next phase.
