Gōketsu Japan - Thirty-three lyrical vignettes bridging Earth and the cosmos in just one-minute flashes.
There was a time when music was judged by its grandiosity and "perfection." And then, from the opposite end of that spectrum, something entirely different appears.
Gōketsu Japan, Nachos's tenth album, spans 33 tracks, totalling around 36 minutes-each only about a minute long. Scan the track titles-"Omusubi," "Dog or Cat," "If You're Worried, Sleep"-and you might think it reads like a Twitter feed or train-station poster slogans. But when you press play, you realize: this is no mere joke.
Each track is short-blink, and it's gone. Yet at the exact moment it ends something drops into the listener's mind: a seed of awareness. Everyday scenes and emotions are cut out, tossed into sound, and somehow strike deep. Not with force, but with resonance.
These pieces rely on voice and message. Minimal sound, minimal ornamentation, minimal instrumentation. That intentional austerity draws your focus inevitably to words, to pauses, to voice's color. The production's restraint paradoxically amplifies its verbal and conceptual richness.
Consider "Adomasu." A portmanteau of Advice and Masturbation-the urge to "advise" someone even when unasked, merely to relieve oneself mentally. That in itself stings. And yet Nachos compresses this sharp observation into just over a minute of music that balances humor and satire with uncanny precision.
Contrast that with the final track, "Respond, Please!" It feels like a transmission from another dimension. A planetary SOS from Earth-or perhaps a message from the cosmos back to us. After painstakingly examining the trivialities of everyday life, the album suddenly opens wide to the sky-an ending with cinematic grandeur.
At first, the album title Gōketsu Japan may strike you as slightly absurd-playful, tongue-in-cheek. But after experiencing these thirty-three tracks, it doesn't feel gimmicky. Instead, it resonates as a gesture of respect for every person alive in these times.
Here, gōketsu isn't a flashy hero. It's anyone who-despite worry, anxiety, wounds-still eats, still speaks, still works, rests, sleeps, day after day. Tracks like "Konbu ni Onbu ni Dakko," "Hurry Up," "ABCDEFG," each bear the innocence of childhood poetry, yet within that purity they capture the essence of being human.
Does this album have "meaning"? You might wonder. The answer: yes-and no. It doesn't force meaning or deliver "solutions." Instead, it asks: "Is meaning really so important?"
And yet, it sticks with you. A phrase returns to you as a soft hum. Works like this are rare-and it's precisely those that seep into everyday life.
With Gōketsu Japan, Nachos is reexamining what art and music can be. There's something to say-but Nachos chooses to leave space in between. Not declaring it outright, but more like whispering it between laughs, yet all with sincerity.
Gōketsu Japan is funny, yet often heartbreaking. It appears to sing of the ordinary, but music reveals deep truths about life. And by the final note, you might feel: "Maybe I'll give life one more go."
This-perhaps-is music's true magic.
