The popular marimba piece "Sugaria" was written by Eric Sammut with the name of his student Ria Ideta in the title. In 2007, Ria Ideta gave the world premiere in Paris with Paris Conservatoire Orchestra under the direction of Xavier Delette. The word sugar and the name Ria make up the title Sugaria. Ria Ideta had not performed "Sugaria" publicly since the premiere, so the performance in 2022 will be the first in 15 years, arranged for marimba and piano by Ria Ideta for this performance. Ria Ideta excels not only in her playing, but also in arranging. The piano performance of Yuma Matsuoka, which harmonizes so well with the marimba, further enhances the charm of "Sugaria". In September 2022, the performance of this piece and the interview became a hot topic on NHK "Classic Club". Please enjoy this enchanting ensemble performance!   • Ria Ideta

    Ria Ideta was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1982. She has lived in Kumamoto, Japan, since she was two years old. Ria began playing the marimba at the age of six. She went to France when she was 18, and graduated with top honors from the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris. She also graduated at the top of her class from the soloist course at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg. In 2003, she was awarded First Prize at the first Paris International Marimba Competition. Ria has performed in many music festivals throughout the world. She has appeared in the Rolandseck International Music Festival (Germany), Zagreb International Music Festival (Croatia), Festival International de Musique de Salon-de-Provence (France), and Evermay Chamber Music Project (Washington, D.C.), and performed with internationally acclaimed musicians such as Emmanuel Pahud, Paul Meyer, Eric Le Sage, François Leleux, Guy Braunstein, and Nabil Shehata. Her appearances as a marimbist in classical music festivals are without precedent. Since 2012, as a regular artist with the Kammeroper München, Ria has performed a wide range of operas in a new type of formation made up of chamber orchestra and marimba. Each year she appears in more than 50 performances throughout Europe, earning attention in every location.
Ria frequently performs with orchestras. She has made a number of appearances with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra in the Berliner Philharmonie Concert Hall. In Japan, she has performed with such orchestras as the Japan Philharmonic, New Japan Philharmonic, and Osaka Philharmonic. Ria is enthusiastic about premiering new compositions and performing commissioned works. In September 2014, she performed the highly successful world premiere of a marimba concerto written for her by Ohad Ben-Ari, in a concert with the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kazuki Yamada. In 2017, she performed the world premiere of a work by Dai Fujikura at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, with the performance broadcast on the BBC. Ria has studied with professors Yoshihisa Mizuno, Eric Sammut, and Emmanuel Séjourné. She is a guest professor at Heisei College of Music. In January 2021, Ria Ideta became a visiting professor at the London Performing Academy of Music. She resides in Berlin.
