Formed in December 2025 and having just released their debut single "Tonight" on January 21, 2026, Tokyo indie band GIRLFRIENDZ return at lightning speed with their second single "D.M.I.S." - just one month after their debut.
Embracing a unique aesthetic they describe as "horror but pop," GIRLFRIENDZ have been moving at full throttle: making their live debut in Okinawa in January, hosting their own curated event "Diary" in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo in February, and heading straight to Sendai for another live show the following day.
Born from the anxiety and sparkle of these whirlwind days, "D.M.I.S." is an indie anthem that transforms urgency and restlessness into pure groove.
The artwork, following their debut single, is once again created by Baba, an artist who has also worked on releases by Brooklyn-based guitarist and singer-songwriter Mei Semones. The visuals vividly capture the song's romantic mood, deepening the impression of its sonic world.
The music video follows vocalist Mayu as she dances wildly, plays, and sings through the streets of Shibuya without a care for who's watching. Shot with a camera texture reminiscent of the 2010s, each fleeting moment of the city at night creates an immersive feeling - as if you're walking right beside her. Packed with GIRLFRIENDZ's signature playful and provocative gimmicks, the video charges forward nonstop to the very end.
Musically, "D.M.I.S." pushes further into the mainstream than their debut "Tonight," emerging as a flawless pop song imbued with GIRLFRIENDZ's constant awareness of "guilty pleasure."
Lyrics like "Don't make it serious," "I like you best when it's this bad," and "If we name it, it dies in the light," paired with vivid, cinematic song development and punchy sounds crafted by producer Miguel - whose background lies in game sound design - will hijack your ears until the very last second.
Inviting listeners into a razor-edge world that feels like a feverish summer night, "D.M.I.S." marks the long-awaited second single from GIRLFRIENDZ.
GIRLFRIENDZ is a Tokyo-based indie pop band formed in December 2025. The project began when Miguel, a Spain-born game sound creator. The background Miguel has in game sound design, the music moves fluidly between indie textures and mainstream, anthemic pop. Their songs unfold like short films, carrying a strong sense of narrative and atmosphere. While rooted in a genuine love for what has traditionally been considered cool, GIRLFRIENDZ refuses to settle there - placing a full stop on the familiar and transforming it into new vibes. In January 2026, less than a month after forming, GIRLFRIENDZ released their debut single, Tonight. With their distinctive blend of DIY spirit, pop accessibility, and cinematic sensibility, GIRLFRIENDZ are quickly emerging as one of the most exciting new bands to watch.
