"Gentle Maiden" is a traditional Irish waltz.
Its exact origin is unknown, but it is an old tune that has been cherished in Ireland and Scotland since around the 18th to 19th centuries. It appears in 19th-century tune collections such as O'Neill's Music of Ireland, and in Irish Gaelic it is known as "An Maigdean Ceannsa" ("gentle maiden").
The piece has been performed on a wide range of instruments, including voice, harp, flute, and fiddle. During the period of the Irish independence movement, it is said to have been sung as a symbol of the homeland.
Today, it remains a standard piece often used as background music for weddings and other calm, ceremonial settings.
