What if a guitar had arrived in Okinawa during the Ryukyu-Kingdom era, without anyone to play it?
Perhaps it would have been tuned like a sanshin, and played in a way that sounds like this.
The same could be said for the dan-bau, and the dutar, and even the sarod.
New artwork, same laidback sound.
Cover art newly designed by Wataru Kousaka with Affinity Designer.
Wataru Kousaka is a musician raised in Okinawa, Japan. He creates impressionistic and ambient instrumental music using traditional instruments from various parts of Asia, including the sanshin, sarod and dan bau. His compositions draw soundscapes that feel like paintings made of wind and light. His music is deeply influenced by his early experience with choral singing, where each voice played a different role and supported the others. Instruments with different tonalities and characters are not blended into uniformity, but gently brought closer through tuning adjustments, creating harmony through mutual respect rather than sameness. Each piece offers a quiet yet vivid expression of memory, atmosphere and the breath of his island home.
