"This proverb comes from an old Chinese story about an old man living near the border. His horse ran away to the land of the nomads, which his neighbors considered bad luck. However, the horse later returned with several fine horses. Then, the old man's son fell off one of these horses and broke his leg, which the neighbors saw as misfortune. But because of his injury, the son didn't have to go to war when it broke out, and he was the only young man in the village who survived. This story illustrates that what appears to be good or bad fortune can change unexpectedly."
