In Tales from Earthsea, dragons are portrayed as noble and mysterious beings who have existed since long before the age of humans. They speak an ancient language distinct from that of humankind and possess profound wisdom, quietly observing the passage of time. The ryūteki is a traditional Japanese transverse flute used in Gagaku, Japan's imperial court music. As its name suggests, it has long been said to represent the voice of the dragon. Its sound, soaring as if through the heavens, carries echoes of memories stretching back a thousand years. I performed "Teru's Song," the theme from Studio Ghibli's Tales from Earthsea, on the ryūteki.I hope this recording evokes a sense of resonance between the ancient presence of the dragon in the film and the timeless voice of the ryūteki.
