maishinta - HOHOEMI

"Gentle smile begin to echo
Morning comes
Gathering fragments of dreams"

"HOHOEMI" is the song that marked the beginning of maishinta's music.

April 2016.
The day Shinta and Mai first met.

While waiting for Mai, who was running late, Shinta wrote a short poem inspired by a TED talk Mai had once given.

It described a landscape Mai had seen in Nepal.

That was the beginning of the song "HOHOEMI."

At the time, the name maishinta did not yet exist, and they had not even decided whether they would continue making music together.

Yet from this one song, born almost by chance, a long creative journey began.

Within its gentle sound, centered on piano and voice, the song speaks of the arrival of morning, young trees wet with rain, a boy dancing in the wind, and a girl singing while thinking of someone.

A quiet radiance of life itself, unfolding alongside everyday life.

Not in great events, but in a smile exchanged in passing, and in the wind, light, and rain, there is a sense of wonder and joy in being alive in this world.

The word "HOHOEMI" would go on to become an important motif, appearing again and again throughout maishinta's music and work.

Music, poetry, meditation, and a connection with all things in nature and existence.

At the heart of maishinta's creative work, which has continued while taking many different forms, is a feeling that has remained unchanged since the moment this song was born.

To look at the world once again and say, "The world is beautiful."

And the entrance to that way of seeing is found within our everyday lives.

From now on, maishinta will begin releasing, one by one through streaming services, the songs they have created over many years.

The first song they have chosen is "HOHOEMI," the song where everything began.

Born from a small coincidence on the day the two of them met, it became the seed from which hundreds of songs would eventually grow - the first seed, and the original resonance.

For a new morning.

For a day when you meet someone.

For a moment when you want to look at the world a little more gently.

We hope this song will resonate as a small smile in each place where it is heard.

Artist Profile

  • maishinta

maishinta is a Japanese musical duo formed by Shinta Sakamoto and Mai Sakamoto. =============== SHINTA SAKAMOTO Profile Shinta started playing the piano at the age of 3 and began composing at 12. At 23, he co-founded Tokyo Recordings (now TOKA) with musical collaborators from his student days, including Nariaki Obukuro and Yaffle. His work spans film scores, songwriting for artists, and creating music for TV commercials. In 2015, following the passing of his grandmother, Shinta traveled to London, where he began singing. In April 2016, he met Mai Mukaida, who later became his wife (now Mai Sakamoto), and they began creating music together. Shinta also established his own music label, 8th MAY Records, and has released over 30 albums (more than 300 tracks) under names such as maishinta and Shinta Sakamoto. In 2023, all 300 tracks from 8th MAY Records became available for streaming on maishinta music. In 2024, as a practice to connect his creativity with peace-building, Shinta founded SINGA, a singing meditation project. Through music, he continues to engage in diverse activities aimed at making the world a more peaceful and loving place. ============= MAI SAKAMOTO Profile At 15, Mai encountered a humanitarian aid worker in Nepal, which inspired her to visit the country alone at 17. This experience led to further meaningful connections, and at 26, she launched the Coffret Project, aimed at boosting women's self-esteem through makeup. She later founded the cosmetics brand Lalitpur to support women who are survivors of human trafficking. As her public speaking engagements, including TED Talks, increased, she became fascinated by the power of the voice. She began writing and performing her own poetry. In April 2016, Mai met Shinta Sakamoto, her future husband, and sang on the track HOHOEMI, which was born from her being late to their first meeting. This marked the beginning of her music career as part of maishinta. To date, Mai has released four albums as maishinta, sold at locations including Tower Records nationwide. In 2024, she co-founded SINGA with Shinta, a singing meditation project that helps people reconnect with warmth and the experience of love through vocal resonance. Book: Living Beautiful Moments (Discover 21).
