Inspired by Chikamatsu Monzaemon's "Uzuki no Momiji" (1706)

This play is based on the real-life "Date Disturbance" (a family feud in the Sendai domain) that occurred in the early Edo period and the brutal murder of the legendary courtesan Takao Dayu. This is a highly bizarre and visually shocking story in which the leaves turn bright red due to the courtesan's grudge during April (Uzuki) in the lunar calendar, a time when the leaves are normally beautiful and green.
